Onwards and Upwards, and just a little Backwards

I am not traditional. At least when it comes to my reasoning. Sometimes I like to do things a little differently. And with that, I want my son to recognize those things that are a little untraditional. Unique. And embrace them. To look for new ways of doing things. To be creative!

The world of design is always changing. What our children view and need to recognize are not things we would have ever come in contact with when we were children. My son spends countless hours on his iPod. We spend time on the internet. The variety of books and their illustrations are amazing. But what he sees on his apps, what he sees in his books, is unique from piece to piece. And he needs to learn and recognize that there are different ways that some letters are viewed. Yes, I’m talking about fonts. So when I created these flashcards and the alphabet wall art, I had that in mind. There are millions of fonts out there, and I want him be able to recognize that this “I” might not look like this “I”, but they are still both an “I”. And there are different ways to write a lowercase “a”. My artwork reflects a variety of types, and many ways that your child might view them. They are never too young to start learning and it’s never too early to start teaching.

Here I go!

I am not a writer. Should one never preface with that? I am totally against blogs. How am I doing so far?  Probably not so good. I am a designer. A mother. A wife. A business owner. Soon to be a teacher. A JESUS FOLLOWER. And with all of that pushing me, I felt led to start a new business.

I have an almost 4 year old son. Ethan. Ethan is amazing, and he LOVES to learn, or else I probably wouldn’t be doing this. This. Homeschooling. I haven’t technically started yet, but I’m getting ready. For me, getting ready means designing. And it all started here. I’m a graphic designer with a passion for interior design. So the thought of filling our “classroom” with the standard primary colored, old-school learning tools made me cringe. And when I searched for these things, they didn’t have the content I was looking for.

I started with flashcards, filled with not just letters, because he knows his letters. I added the things that I know he needs. The letter in a word. The word as all lowercase, all capital, and title cased. The word in a sentence. All designed to match his playroom. Modern and fun. So that was my first product. But then the more I looked at my files, the more I felt them lacking. They were fun, and the colors were exactly what I wanted, but he needed to get more than just a word from them. So then came product number two. Ethan needs to learn God’s Word, His truths, facts, more than anything else. So the flashcards became Bible flashcards. And now I’m happy.
